SOYA PRODUCTION WAS INITIATED IN COLLABORATION WITH CIAT ON A BIGGER SCALE IN 2012. IT STRONGLY CONTRIBUTES TO FARMERS’ WELLBEING THROUGH ITS MANY ADVANTAGES.
THE AIM FOR THE PROMOTION OF SOYA, WHICH IS A PEST TOLERANT CROP, WAS TO
- INCREASE ACCESS TO AN AFFORDABLE SOURCE OF HIGH-QUALITY PROTEINS TO SIGNIFICANTLY CONTRIBUTE TO HOUSEHOLD DIETS
- IMPROVE THE HIGHLY DEGRADED SOIL FERTILITY BY WAY OF NITROGEN FIXATION
- INTRODUCE A CASH CROP FOR INCOME
IN ORDER TO ORGANIZE FARMERS INTO A MORE STRUCTURED UNIT THAT CAN FACILITATE THEIR ACCESS TO INPUT AND MARKETING, A COOPERATIVE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2013.
AT THE SAME TIME, A SOYA-PROCESSING UNIT WAS INSTALLED AND FARMERS WERE TRAINED IN VALUE ADDITION OF THE CROP (BEVERAGES, YOGHURT, SOYA NUTS, FLOUR, ETC.).
REGULAR TRAINING FOR SEED AND GRAIN PRODUCTION, PROPER STORAGE, COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS, DETAILED WORK PLANS, ETC. ARE ONGOING AND HAVE INTENSIFIED PRODUCTION, VALUE ADDITION/PROCESSING AND INCOME.
WE HAVE ASSISTED FARMERS IN ESTABLISHING ACCESS TO MARKETS FOR GRAINS AND SEEDS.
THE INTRODUCTION OF CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE HAS ALSO GREATLY IMPROVED HARVEST YIELDS OF SOYA.
